Cowboys need heroics like 1999 to make finals
RUGBY LEAGUE: There will be visions of 1999 if the Warwick Cowboys end up in a play off next week in the Toowoomba Rugby League A-grade competition.
Warwick could be in play offs for sixth in both A and reserve-grades.
In 1999, Warwick beat Brothers in a mid-week play off for the last finals spot (fifth) in A grade and went on to play in the grand final against eventual premiers Oakey. They had more than 10 successive wins on the way to the grand final.
This season, Warwick had a better start to the season than in 1999 but have been inconsistent in the second half of the season in the wake of up to six players being out with injury at times.
The Cowboys under-18 and second-division sides have secured top-six spots and the best chance of a third finals spot appears to be in reserve grade.
Two round of fixtures this Sunday will determine finals spots, Warwick is at home to Highfields and Gatton at home to Souths.
In A grade, Gatton are favourites at home to beat Souths and if they do the Cowboys top-six hopes are dead and buried.
If the Souths Tigers win at Gatton and Warwick beats fourth-placed Highfields, Warwick, Gatton and Souths will be equal sixth on 16 points.
In reggies, Warwick can make a top-six play off against Souths if they beat fourth-placed Highfields and leaders Gatton beat Souths.
Gatton has scored 556 points and only conceded 156 in reserve-grade this season and with home ground advantage are strong favourites to beat Souths.
If Gatton win, Warwick must beat a Highfields side which has scored 358 points this season and conceded 328 in reserve grade.
Warwick is five points behind Highfields on the points table but has scored 380 points and conceded 388 this season in reggies. Pittsworth is on 14 points but has the bye this weekend so can't improve and can't make the finals.
TRL president Brian Gilroy said the league rules do not allow a calculator (for and against) to be used to determine finals spots.
"If three teams finish equal sixth in A grade, there will be two play offs next week," he said.
The bottom two on for-and-against, currently Warwick and Souths, would be in the first play-off, possibly Tuesday night, and Gatton would meet the winner, possibly on Thursday night, to determine sixth.
Gilroy said any play offs would most likely be at a neutral ground in Toowoomba.
All games in the four finals weekends, other than play offs, will be played at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
