Cowboys players do outstanding job on a tough day
RUGBY LEAGUE: The premiership dreams of the Warwick Cowboys are over for another year with both A and under-18 teams going down by six and eight point margins.
Warwick scored first in the under-18 game before surrendering the lead close to half-time.
In A-grade, second rower Matt Marshall scored late in the first half to secure a lead at half-time.
In the A-grade game, Warwick had the ball in the final minute of play and only some desperate defence by Pittsworth to bundle winger Brodie Quirk into touch cost the Cowboys a chance of a sideline conversion to level the scores.
Pittsworth scored four tries to two but winger Dan Watson landed two goals from near touch.
If Warwick had scored with 30 seconds to go, Cowboys fans would have had their fingers crossed Watson could do it again despite a wide angle and wet conditions.
The 18-12 win was a timely result for Pittsworth which celebrated its 50th season in the TRL this year.
Rain during the game and in the days prior to the decider left the playing field wet and muddy, making conditions tough for both teams.
After an 80-minute slog, Pittsworth won by just six points as Warwick made the Danes work hard for the Hutchies-Chronicle Cup victory.
The John McDonald Medal for man of the match capped a breakthrough season for Pittsworth five-eighth Thomas O'Sullivan in his first ever grand final.
Both teams took some time to adapt to the conditions and it wasn't until the 21st minute that Pittsworth second-rower Mitchell Carpenter crossed for the first try to give the Danes the lead.
Warwick hit the front just before half-time as Dan Watson converted Matt Marshall's try to go into the break in front 6-4.
Pittsworth regained the lead soon after the break as centre Liam Jocumsen scored a try in the 43rd minute to see the Danes go 8-6 up.
The Danes then kicked ahead further with second-rower Daniel York pouncing on an error from Warwick fullback Craig Donn to score to take a 14-6 lead.
Pittsworth stretched that lead to 18-6 when York put Kurtis Shayler over out wide.
Warwick hit back with a try to centre Joe Fuimaono in the 62nd minute to close the gap to 18-12 but the Cowboys couldn't conjure another despite their best efforts.
Danes coach Ian Brackstone was full of praise for the efforts of his players.
"The effort that these boys show for each other is second to none,” he said.
"That was probably shown in the back end of the game there where they turned Warwick away in this (grandstand) corner and then three of them turned up on the far side to stop (the Warwick attack).”
While disappointed with the result, Warwick captain Dylan Galloway was proud of his squad.
"It was very tough out there. Conditions didn't make it easy for either side,” he said.
"Congratulations to Pittsworth. They played better on the day and deserve the win.
"(But) I'm feeling honoured. These bunch of blokes did an outstanding job.”
Captain-coach of the 1987 premiership-winning Cowboys, Brian Dunne saw plenty of parallels at half-time between 1987 and yesterday.
He was high in praise of the work of the Warwick forwards in the first half, praised half-back Paul Cantwell for his effort and said the two young wingers were going well.
