Cowboys promote star colt to A grade
RUGBY LEAGUE: Prolific scoring under-18 winger Kai Etherington has been promoted to the Warwick Cowboys' A-grade side for the match against premiers Pittsworth tonight.
The game will match the clubs which played in the 2016 TRL grand final, which Pittsworth won 18-12.
Etherington is the leading Cowboys' scorer in the U18 grade but his goalkicking is unlikely to be needed as fellow winger Dan Watson has proved to be one of the best kickers in the competition.
The new A-grade winger regularly scores multiple tries in U18s.
Coach Craig Mullaly said Etherington had earnt his spot in A grade.
"It will be a tough game at Pittsworth but we are pretty confident, we are up for it,” he said.
"Kai played in A grade in a trial game but this will be his debut in a fixture.”
Warwick will go into the game without centre Joe Fuimaono, who has an ankle injury, and back rower Matt Marshall, who is struggling with a hamstring injury.
Regular 2016 A-grade winger Brodie Quirk played in the centres in reggies a fortnight ago and will come in for Fuimaono.
Dion Galloway will come into the back row, with Jordyn Hogden out with state touch rugby commitments.
Mullaly decided that fullback is the best position for Craig Donn, who was used in the back row in some games early in the season.
The coach said the major improver in the past month was prop Josh 'Bobcat' O'Brien.
"He has dropped a bit more weight and is improving each week.”
The first of four games will start at 2.10pm today.
Cutters at home
THE Killarney Cutters will play Tenterfield in a BRL game this afternoon at Charlie Andrews Oval.
The Cutters will be without prop John Trindall, who is interstate working, but will be almost at full strength.
Green brothers Bradley and Nathan will both play, as will valuable utility player Rohan Keogh.
In the other game, ladder leaders Inglewood will travel to Stanthorpe.
Inglewood will be upbeat after the selection of captain-coach Brent Osborne and Brent Hearne in the Queensland Outback team after last weekend's carnival at Ilfracombe.
