Cowboys win against Tigers

COACH Gary Lawrence isn’t getting carried away with a 54-6 victory against Souths in the first round of the Toowoomba Rugby League competition.

“It was pleasing to be able to score some tries but Souths dominated the ruck area,” Lawrence said.

“We have to improve our work around the ruck if we wish to be competitive in the TRL competition each week.”

Warwick led 26-6 at half time and went through the game without injury.

Lawrence said prop Cameron Mulcahy, lock Luke Brosnan and fullback Zac Pauli were three of the best Cowboys.

“Our back three, Zac, Garth Miller and Hayden McNicol played well with Hayden taking some inspirational high balls which Queensland Cup players would be proud of. Our bench of players from reserve and C grade was strong,” Lawrence said.

Scott Kerridge was inspirational in the centres. Vinnie Mei filled the other centre spot and played well after being a late replacement for the injured Bob Nicholls.

A rare Friday night round of fixtures will be played this week with the U18 game at 5.30pm at Father Ranger Oval.

The change is due to the Goondiwindi Picnic Races on Saturday.

Scorers: A grade: Cowboys 54 (Garth Miller 2, Ryan McIvor 2, Cameron Mulcahy 2, Trent Achilles, Brendan McNicol, Zac Pauli, Luke Brosnan tries, Trent Achilles 7 goals) d Souths 6. Best forward - Cameron Mulcahy; best back Zac Pauli; player’s player - Cameron Mulcahy.
