Cowboys set to down the Hawks

THE Warwick Cowboys next game is against the Gatton Hawks at Cahill Park, Gatton, on Sunday.

The Hawks are hovering close to the top five in A grade this year so it will be a good challenge for Cowboys to regain some momentum before the year is out.

The under-18 side need a win to boost their top five chances after receiving a forfeit from Newtown last Sunday.

Last week saw only the A grade and reserve-grade sides play Newtown away and unfortunately neither side could win.

Just a friendly reminder about the big Legends Day planned for the 20th of this month, tickets to the August 19 dinner are selling rapidly and people are coming from far and wide to enjoy a great weekend of sport and entertainment, so get in quick for your tickets and make sure you keep the weekend marked on your calendars.

A grade

COACH George McVeigh was pumped after the previous week’s win against Pittsworth and was quietly confident that the Condy Club A graders were more than capable of beating Newtown, but unfortunately the team were unable to match the Bluebags and couldn’t get the win.

Inconsistency has been the Achilles heel of the first graders this year but coach McVeigh was more than happy with the effort shown by the boys.

He pointed out that he wants to see full commitment for the remaining three games before the team gets a well-earned break.

Captain Aaron McVeigh put in another dominant display in the forwards, Garry Ellery and Michael Ellis also both had strong games. Michael O’Keefe, Lincoln Cutmore and Chris “Mad dog with whiskers” McGahan were the pick of the backs.

Lincoln Cutmore was at his dangerous best with the ball and O’Keefe troubled the bluebags every time he took the line on.

George again wants to thank the U18 players who again stepped up on short notice to boost numbers after a couple of late withdrawals.

He is hoping to finish the strongly and although the finals for this year are gone, we can certainly trouble the teams that are involved just to make things interesting.

Reserve grade

THE Horse and Jockey Reggies put in another gusty effort but unfortunately were outplayed by a more determined Newtown side.

Player numbers were down yet again and made the job even more difficult but coach Nick Owens was more than pleased with the effort the boys gave.

Coach Owens paid special thanks to U18 players Jeb Jerome, Lachlan Stewart and Scott Fisher.

These young guys stepped in to help on very short notice and the coach would personally like to thank them, they certainly showed plenty of Cowboy team spirit.

Well done boys. Big Rod Hansen showed it wasn’t only the young brigade that can lend a hand and big Rocket laced the boots on and although some of the speed may have disappeared he showed he hasn’t lost any heart. Many thanks Rod.

Stand out performances were from captain Scott Beard, Craig Cantwell and Scott Fisher.

Beardy and Cracker are without a doubt the two most consistent players going around this season and young Scott Fisher showed that he will certainly be a valuable player for the club in the future years.

Coach Nick Owens is hoping for a change of luck against Gatton away this weekend.
