Cowboy's three wins

A PAST winner of the bull ride at the Warwick Rodeo has won three titles in the Jupiters National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

Rhys Angland, of Wantabadgery, New South Wales, won the bull ride, saddle bronc ride and all around titles at the NFR which finished at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Sunday night.

Angland won the bull ride at the Warwick Rodeo in 2010 and was second to Warwick cowboy Lucas Wilson in the saddle bronc ride last year.

He recorded eight scores in 10 rounds of two events, including two firsts in the bull ride and three firsts in saddle bronc. Two of his firsts in the saddle bronc ride were split (equal points), one with Oxley, Victoria, cowboy Brad Pierce and one with Benalla, Victoria, and former Millmerran, Queensland rider, Peter Moffatt.

After his triple victories on Sunday, Angland told organisers he was "still taking it in" about his achievement.

While Wilson qualified fourth for the finals, he did not compete as he is currently on the North American circuit.

Three Queenslanders won titles - Gatton breakaway roper Megan Pohlman, Ebenezer rope and tie star Mark Knox and Springsure cowboy Brendan Kenny who won the team roping in combination with Victorian rider Aaron Bookluck.

Fred Osman was the best performed of the Southern Downs riders with a win in round one on Thursday night in the bareback.

Mark Collins missed out on a place this year after being third overall in saddle bronc last year.

Brock Mulhall was also unplaced in team roping and bareback.

One of the success stories for Darling Downs fans at the NFR was Moffatt, who won the aggregate in saddle bronc.

While points are awarded for placings in each of the five rounds to determine titles, the aggregates in rough stock events are determined by the highest overall scores.

Moffatt rode five head for a top of 357 points to win the aggregate in saddle bronc.

The all around cowgirl title was won by another rider who has starred in the annual Warwick Rodeo at the Warwick Showgrounds, Moree rider Wendy Caban.

After winning the all-around, barrel racing and breakaway roping titles in 2009, Caban won the all around this year with three wins, two in barrel racing and one in breakaway.

Gatton rider Megan Pohlman was the top performed in an individual event with four wins in five rounds to secure the breakaway roping title.
