Cowboys tough trip to Clifton sees a win, a loss and a draw

RUGBY LEAGUE: Warwick Cowboys have struggled on a tough road trip to Platz Oval in Clifton at the weekend.

Only the Cowboys' under-18 side managed to come away with the win, as the reserves battled out a draw and the A-grade side suffered a loss.

The 34-22 Wattles' win in A-grade sees them move into outright first position on the 2018 Hutchies A-grade Cup ladder, while the Cowboys move back a spot to fifth after nine rounds.

For the Wattles, Ty Gardner scored two tries, with one each to Matt Duggan and Jake Hargreaves.

For the Cowboys, Kai Ethergton, Josh Cruice, Declan McLoughlin and Mick Bloomfield all scored a try each and Kai Etherington booted three goals in the 12-point loss.

At this point in the season, the Cowboys A-grade side has played eight matches for five wins and three losses.

In reserve grade, it was a thrilling encounter, seeing both sides locked at 24 apiece after the full 80 minutes.

It was a last-ditch effort from the Wattles side, who were trailing 24-12 halfway through the second half.

They ran out of time though, managing only to run out a draw. The Cowboys currently sit in seventh position on the reserve grade ladder, with Wattles four spots above in third.

For the Wattles, brothers Nick and Tom Morris both ran home tries, along with Joshua Henry and Dale McAntee.

Tom Morris kicked the team's four goals.

Brandon Vaughan ran in three tries for the Cowboys, with Ian Brown and Lance McGrady both scoring one each. Vaughan was the sole goal-kicker, slotting home two goals.

In the under-18s match, the Cowboys ran in seven tries to three as they ran out 36 to 18 winners. For the Cowboys, Jake Speed, Michael van de Sande and Felix Clarke all scored two tries while Nick Lane and Hugh Doolan scored one each.

The Cowboys will meet Oakey Bears at home this Saturday afternoon.
