Cowboys U18 team eye third spot

JON Thomas has his fingers crossed the Warwick under-18 side can finish third and get two chances in the Toowoomba Rugby League finals series.

Warwick was in fourth spot before its 62-0 win against Gatton on Sunday.

The under-18 coach expects two tough games to finish the fixture season.

Warwick plays Wattles on Sunday at Platz Oval after recording a 32-24 victory in the local derby in the first round.

In its final game of the season, the Cowboys play Valleys at 1pm on August 20 as the first game on Black Toyota Legends Day at Father Ranger Oval.

Half of the Cowboys under-18 team have experiencing some A-grade footy this season, which Thomas believes will have them match hardened for the finals.

“Playing a higher level of football and often backing up for a second game helps with their fitness,” Thomas said.

The Cowboys have a squad of 22 in the U18 grade with 20 allowed to play in the finals.

He said performance in the next fortnight would determine spots in the team for the finals.
