Cox gets hockey gig at games at Gold Coast
HOCKEY: Toni Cox is excited to be chosen as a volunteer for the April 4-15 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast.
"I applied to be a volunteer at the hockey once they opened applications,” she said.
"I was excited to receive an email this week informing me I had been chosen, accepted the offer and have been asked to be at orientation days at the Gold Coast in November.”
Cox rated this week's selection as a volunteer on par with the excitement to be chosen to play masters hockey at interstate level.
She has played touch rugby for Queensland and Australia and since a move to hockey, has played for South Australia at four national championships and been selected in two Queensland teams for the nationals.
"I had played touch for 35 years, been umpire's co-ordinator in Warwick for a time, vice-president and organised the draws,” she said.
Cox admitted she needed a change and was invited by Lisa Bergemann to play club hockey for Saints and as they say, the rest is history.
"I started to think about making state teams to play in the nationals and enjoyed the challenge to work hard to become a better player,” she said.
Cox was comfortable with how her interview for a volunteer role went in recent weeks, believing her experience in touch and hockey and her work as financial officer at Assumption College could help her selection chances.
"I enjoy helping in the community,” she said.
She will be a mixed zone team member in press operations at the hockey.
