Cricketers aim for cup team at October championships
CRICKET: Some Warwick cricketers will be aiming to make their World Cup debut when a national over 50s team is named after the nationals in Brisbane in October.
The first 2018 national championships were held in Orange at Easter and the second nationals have been put on to finalise the Australian team for the World Cup.
The Queensland team, which came third in Orange, was half Warwick continuing the outstanding form of Southern Downs players in masters/veterans sport in sports such as hockey and cycling.
Two of the best left-handed batsmen to play in Warwick, Tony Small and younger brother Darren, were in the team at Orange although Darren suffered an injury and missed most of the carnival.
Their mother, June Small, is team manager. The Small brothers played in many premiership wins by Wheatvale in Warwick cricket.
Warwick player Peter Rutledge scored two unbeaten 40s in Orange and is planning to play in Brisbane in October.
"Some of the boys from Warwick will be aiming to make the cup team. A few players play monthly over 50s games down the coast,” Rutledge said.
Other players in the Queensland team with a Warwick connection included paceman Greg McMahon, David Kercheval and Paul Smart.
Kercheval and Smart both live east of the Great Dividing Range but travelled to Warwick to play for Bears/Smalls XI in this year's Warwick Australia Day Carnival.
The team was made up of mostly country players and included Des Gibbs from Toowoomba.
This year, Queensland won the first day/night cricket game played by veterans at national level against Victoria.
Already two Warwick hockey players are in national World Cup teams this year, Rob Pohlman and Adam Byrne.
