CROC SHOCK: Friend "extremely traumatised" after attack

THE friend of a woman thought to have been killed in a Queensland crocodile attack was left "extremely traumatised" by the incident.

The 47-year-old woman is understood to have tried to stop her friend being taken by the crocodile in Queensland's Daintree National Park in far north Queensland.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Neil Noble said the friend was now being treated at Mossman Hospital.

He said she is believed to have seen her friend, 46, be grabbed by the crocodile and pulled into the ocean.

Mr Noble said the pair were walking in the water when the crocodile struck.

Crocodile attack: Woman snatched from waist-deep water

A WOMAN is feared dead after being attacked by a crocodile in the Daintree National Park, in far north Queensland.

The 46-year-old was swimming with a friend at 10.30pm on Sunday, according to police.

Senior Constable Russell Parker said the women were waist-deep in the water, when one was taken by a crocodile.

"It's certainly very, very concerning at this stage and we would hold grave fears for the welfare of the woman," he told ABC News.

"Her 47-year-old friend tried to grab her and drag her to safety and she just wasn't able to do that."

The friend then ran to a nearby shop and raised the alarm.

Snr Const Parker said they had been walking along the beach when they decided to go for a swim.

"We believe they were visiting the area and weren't local to it."

A helicopter search began last night, with State Emergency Service teams searching from sunrise on Monday.
