Warwick editor calls for civil online debate

THE column on our website by our online editor about removing negative material from websites posts drew plenty of comment itself, most of it favourable.

Part of his role is to 'moderate' or edit comments and postings from readers, and there is no question that we love this form of interaction and it is overwhelmingly constructive.

It's just that every now and then something derogatory - or worse, defamatory - slips through.

We are in no way trying to stifle legitimate debate on the issues of the day or week, but there is a line which can be crossed where comments become way too personal or even actionable.

While it can be argued that the defamation laws in this country are far too restrictive - and I for one would argue that - the fact of the matter is that both media outlets and the authors of comments can open themselves up to potentially costly legal action.

Please continue to engage in debate with us and your fellow readers, but let's keep it civil at all times.
