Crowds flock to foodie fest at Felton
ALL roads led to the Felton Food Festival on Sunday, where 12,000 people flocked to the popular farm gate foodie event.
Held on "Whitburn", the 200 hectare private property of John and Nikki Bryce, the Felton Food Festival was first held in 2012 and has gone from strength to strength every year since.
Festival co-ordinator Debbie House said they recorded 12,000 people through the gates on Sunday, which is 4000 up on last year's number.
"We really start planning for next year's event as soon as this year is over," she said.
"It's a good 10-12 months of planning, as we have changed a few things this year. In the past it was run by one person with a few helpers, but this year we have formed a committee to run the event."
The Felton Food Festival began five years ago as a small country market, and has just snowballed from there.
Mrs House said she put it down to the public wanting to reconnect with farms, farmers and agriculture.
"This is one of the few food festivals held on an actual farm, and it provides visitors with a real paddock-to-plate experience," she said.
"It just gets bigger and better each year, and this year we had in excess of 80 stallholders."
Those selling their wares at the festival on Sunday included everything from organic garlic, fresh fruit and vegetables, lamb, beef and chicken, to cold pressed juices, cheese and wines.
There were also cooking demonstrations and tastings, crop tours as well as farming presentations, and musical entertainment.
"The key to the success of the event in my view is the smiles on people's faces, even when they queued for almost an hour to get in the gate," Mrs House said.
