Cunningham and Warwick players win

POLOCROSSE: Cunningham player Ashley Sticklen won the best horse and rider award as Cunningham won the junior title at the Toowoomba Polocrosse Club carnival at the weekend.

Sticklen played in the Cunningham team which won the juniors from runner-up Wandoan.

Killarney won E grade in the open from runners-up Stanley Rivers 2.

Warwick 6 was runner-up in D grade.

Despite their teams not finishing in the top two in their respective grades, two Warwick players won best horse and rider awards.

Callum Brook was best horse and rider in B grade and Millie Beck was best in C grade.

Wandoan 1 won the Toowoomba A-grade title from runners-up Tansey 1.

Test player John Bowling won the best horse and rider award.

The Sue Fraser Memorial Award was won by Taroom player Georgie Keating.

The winning teams in other grades were Chinchilla 2 (B grade), Tansey 3 (C grade), Wandoan 2 (D grade) and Chinchilla 5 (F grade).

Semis for Warwick

A WARWICK women’s team under the captaincy of Katie Barr made the semi-finals of the women’s competition at the New South Wales State Championships at the weekend.

Warwick defeated Bunnan 15-14 in extra time and recorded a 15-12 win against Quirindi before going down in a semi 15-7 to Lake George.

National squad visits

WARWICK could host both men’s and women’s national squads for inter-squad games in August.

The men’s squad under coaches Paul McGrath and Justin Hafey was to play at the Camden grounds in Sydney this weekend but after flood rains last week the carnival has been cancelled.

There is now a strong chance both national squads will play games as part of the August 19-21 NTI Rosebowl Carnival at Morgan Park.

The women’s squad is already earmarked to play in the Warwick carnival.

There are enough players in each of the squads to form two teams for three games of polocrosse on a weekend which will give players a chance to impress selectors in the run-up to the selection of future squads for the World Cup in Warwick in 2019.

The Rose Bowl carnival will include night polocrosse on the Friday and Saturday nights. It is expected the club competition will attract 70 teams in addition to the national squad teams. Many teams will use the carnival as their final preparation for the state championships in September.

In the lead-up to Warwick, Cunningham will host a carnival on August 6-7 and the Gold Coast will have a carnival at Killarney on August 13-14.
