Cunningham Highway "could be closed for a week"

IT IS unknown how long the Cunningham Highway and the Gap will be closed for- but initial reports suggest it could be up to a week.

During the Southern Downs Regional Council's Emergency Management group meeting at 2pm a Main Roads representative said there was up to 1m of rock and rubble across three lanes.

"There are also trees across the road," he said.

"It could be closed for a week.

"There are unconfirmed reports it is worse on the other side."

A Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman said it was hard to establish the extent of the damage as it is not safe to send an inspection crew out yet.

"The damage is not where repair work has been done," she said.

"It is not expected to be as severe as last time.

"We are working to get the area cleared as soon as possible but we cannot guarantee a timeframe."

The spokeswoman said once it was safe to start the clean-up process they did not expect it to take more than a few days.
