Cunningham Polocrosse Club pair in Australian team for South African tour

POLOCROSSE: Two Cunningham players have been selected in the Australian under-21 polocrosse team to tour South Africa in July.

Ryle Waugh and Zac O’Leary are in the U21 team of eight to be coached by former World Cup player Greg Davidge.

Waugh played for Australia in intermediate Tests against Ireland at Cunningham and Warwick grounds in 2013 and was in the Queensland women’s team which narrowly missed the final last week at the nationals in Albury.

O’Leary was part of the Queensland U21 men’s team which won a national title at Albury last weekend.

They will be joined in the U21 team by captain Byron Davison and Beth Hafey who both play for the Tansey club. Bauhinia club member William Taylor is in the national U16 side.

Australian U21 and U16 teams will leave for South Africa on July 8 and play three games against South African teams.

Australian Polocrosse Association president Rodney Geppert said all of the players were excited when named at the presentation ceremony after the nationals in Albury at the weekend.

“I have watched Ryle and Zac over a long period of time and they are both very much deserving of their positions in the team,” Geppert said.

“Ryle is a class act on the polocrosse field and an excellent goal thrower while Zac can play both positions two and three with absolute ease.

“This tour opportunity is recognition of the commitments of the selected players to the sport.”

There is a chance some of the U21 players selected for the South African tour could come into contention for the Australian team for the April, 2019 World Cup at Morgan Park in Warwick.
