Cup day to warm up chill of winter

THE Killarney Hotel/Motel Killarney Cup race meeting at Allman Park tomorrow will be held for the first time in winter since its return to the racing calendar five years ago.

The meeting was originally scheduled in February but was postponed after the damage to facilities at Allman Park from the Australia Day week flood.

Warwick Turf Club president Jim Costello said the people of Killarney traditionally supported the Cup well.

"The calcutta on the Friday night before the Cup at the Killarney Hotel is always well supported," he said.

"The Warwick Turf Club committee has booked a bus to take members to the calcutta."

There is usually entertainment after the Cup meeting but due to the winter timeslot the main focus of the day will be on the racing.

Les Clarke is the only trainer with a Killarney connection who has a runner on Cup day, Outback Image, in the Angus Wickham Memorial QTIS Maiden Plate over 1200m at 2.45pm.

The Wickham family will be represented on the day to make a presentation to the winning connections.

Mr Costello said Killarney Hotel/Motel licensee Don Hearne would present the Cup. This year there is $8500 prize money for the Cup, including $5525 for the winner. Gates open at 11am.
