Morgan Park to host Australian teams in World Cup warm-up
THERE will be three Queenslanders involved with the Australian team in the 2015 Polocrosse World Cup and all three will be part of national games at the Barastoc Interstate Series at Morgan Park on April 17-19.
Warwick player Kent Wells is Australian assistant coach for the World Cup and the team includes Lauren Cant (Cunningham club) and Trent Collins (Tansey).
New South Wales-based Troy Henry is coach after playing in two winning World Cups in Warwick.
The three days of play will be organised by the Warwick Polocrosse Club and will include games between the World Cup team and two Australian development teams which are currently being finalised by the national selection panel which includes Warwick official Ross Shepherd.
Warwick club president Les Fraser said the visit of the Australian team would be the first by a full-strength open team since the men and women in green and gold won the second World Cup at Morgan Park in 2007.
"The development teams will be strong, Australia has a big pool of talented players to select from which is why we are so strong," Fraser said.
"Development team players will be in Warwick keen to impress selectors with a view to pressing for selection in the team for the 2019 World Cup which will be held in Australia."
Fraser expects 60 teams for the Shell Cup club competition and 20 teams from the eastern states for the Barastoc Interstate Series.
Polocrosse members received some sad news this week with the death of Queensland Polocrosse Association life member Sybil Thompson.
Fraser said she and her husband John Thompson, MBE had been great stalwarts of polocrosse for the past 50 years.
"Both were in Warwick at the NTI Rose Bowl in August," Fraser said.
The April weekend in Warwick will be the second weekend of polocrosse in south-east zone for the new season.
The Gold Coast will host a carnival a fortnight earlier at Killarney.
