Cup winning trainer set to return to Warwick

RACING: Grafton trainer John Shelton has vowed to come back to Allman Park for the 2018 Warwick Credit Union Warwick Cup after winning this year with Belflyer.

Belflyer won the cup for Shelton with Benjamin Looker in the saddle after the same horse won last year for trainer Neville Petersen and jockey Ric McMahon. Belflyer was trained in Toowoomba before Shelton started training the horse at Grafton four months ago.

With cup day being a TAB meeting, there were eight races on the card.

Killarney trainer Les Clarke had a win in race 2, the Warwick Veterinary Clinic BenchMark 60 Handicap over 800m, with My Little Diva.

The last was the Frasers Livestock Transport Warwick Newmarket over 1100m which was won by You Say No Way, trained in Toowoomba by Troy Pascoe.

Trainer John Shelton answers a few questions about his cup winner:

How long did it take the horse to settle down in a new stable? We didn't run him for six weeks and then he came second first up in the Casino Cup, won a benchmark race at Grafton, then won the Moree Cup before being unplaced at Ipswich.

Where was his last start? He won the Community Cup at Ballina a fortnight before the Warwick Cup.

Do you like to start a horse once a fortnight? We have started him once a fortnight, you can back up some horses weekly while others need three weeks between runs.

Where to now for the horse? We are not sure, there is a possibility of racing in the Kempsey Cup in three weeks. He will be getting a bit harder to place now as he was up in the weights to 59.5kg on Saturday after winning in Warwick with 54kg in 2016.

Is Benjamin Looker your regular jockey? I try to get Benjamin to ride as many of my horses as possible. He was apprenticed to me.

If you go to Kempsey, will he be the jockey? It will be hard to get him off Belflyer.

What did you think of the Warwick track? I was pretty impressed; it is a nice roomy track so every horse has a chance.

How often have you been to Warwick to race? It was my first visit and I was impressed with the facility, the committee looked after us and I was impressed with the large crowd.

What about Belflyer next year? I will definitely return with a horse for next year's cup; it was a great day out.

Would you be likely being more horses next year: I might target the meeting more next year.

Where you worried the cup was going to be cancelled with the rain: I made my first phone call on Thursday and then at 6am Saturday to make sure it was still on.

What about when it started to rain on the day? I wasn't worried, Belflyer has wet track form.
