Upbeat about the chances of a back-to-back premiership
RUGBY LEAGUE: Killarney Cutters captain-coach John Trindall is upbeat about the chances of back-to-back premierships after his side beat Tenterfield 30-24 in Border Rugby League fixtures.
The same two sides met in the minor semi-final last year when Jeremy Jerome landed the winning field goal in golden point extra time.
Jerome played the same position as last year, five-eighth, in a match Trindall described as harder than the semi.
"They knew we were coming to beat them and we knew it was going to be a tough, hard game," he said.
Trindall said that Tigers'
five-eighth Brendan Minns and lock Jim Loneragan worried his side.
"Brendan controlled the play for the Tigers," Trindall said.
"Tenterfield has lost heaps of players from last year, but are still just as strong.
"There was a good crowd from Tenterfield at the game and some Cutters fans made the trip down," he said.
Killarney had 20 players at the game at Tenterfield after having the same number at training on Friday night.
Ayrton Friedricks played his first game for Killarney on Saturday on the wing and left the field late in the first half with a knee injury.
The Cutters train each Tuesday and Friday.
John Trindall, Nathan Green and Peter Giffin received the most votes in the players' player award.
Five-eighth Jason Cobon received the players' player award for the Stanthorpe Gremlins in a 30-12 victory against Texas at Sullivan Oval.
Lock Ben Staley, second rower Joel Littlefield and the McIntosh brothers, Jarred and Ryan, all impressed for the winners.
Reggie McIntosh was one of the best for Texas as the teams had squads of 19 and 21.
Texas won the league tag game for women 22-4 with Australian touch rugby player Jaime Scott scoring three tries for the winners. Shenae Marsden scored the Gremlins try.
There are no fixtures this week due to the long weekend.
