Cutters ready to remember Xylon

JOHN Trindall reckons the Killarney Cutters can easily match the Warwick Cowboys in the Xylon Smith Memorial Shield game at Charlie Andrews Oval on Saturday.

In the inaugural game last year, the Cowboys won 32-26 after the Warwick team led 26-4 at halftime.

"We have been doing a lot of fitness work at training," Trindall, the Cutters captain-coach said.

"There have been 13 training for the Cutters men's side and eight women each night to play in our league tag team."

Jamie Watts has returned from Glen Innes to play hooker for the Cutters and will pack in the front row with Trindall and Jake Weier.

Mick Brackin will play halfback, Nathan Bennett five-eighth and Brett Lambert fullback.

Trindall said two of his key players would be lock Mick Bloomfield and second rower Chris McGregor.

"Chris has been training really well," Trindall said.

He might have only played two games for the Cowboys but Trindall believes lock Tyson Skyring is one to watch.

"Trent Achilles and Ben Sullivan are threats at half and hooker," he said.

"The game will be bigger than last year, we are at home. It will be close."

As for the captain-coach, he believes playing in memory of his late brother Xylon Smith will bring out the best in the team.

"Xylon played early in the 2013 season and we dedicated our first premiership win in his memory," Trindall said.
