Cutters show courage in defeat

WITH his team trailing Redcliffe 24-6 at half-time, Mackay Cutters coach Anthony Seibold knew it would have been easy for his players to just put up the white flag.

In the opening stanza of their official Intrust Super Cup season at Redcliffe yesterday, the Skills Training Mackay Cutters were on the back foot as they made their way through a mountain of defence.

"(Redcliffe) had a lot of possession in the first half," Seibold said. "They had 22 sets to our 14 - we had to do a lot of defending."

Two quick tries to Nick Slyney and one to former Mackay player Dane Gagai made any chance of a Cutters comeback look tough.

But Mackay refused to give up, scoring first in the second half and fighting to within six points of the Dolphins, before finally going down 28-18.

"I was proud of the way the guys really dug in," Seibold said.

"Their attitude was really good, in the second half in particular.

"We obviously need to improve, but it's certainly something to build on."

After playing just one Queensland Cup team during pre-season, Seibold knew his side was untested against the top teams and he said the Redcliffe game was a starting point.

Despite not having played a game for a month, Cowboys-contracted Tyson Martin was a standout for the Mackay side.

"I thought he was just about the best on field," Seibold said.

The Cutters' injury woes continued, with Dean Tass and Jardine Bobongie suffering thigh and groin strains respectively.

The pair will be assessed this week to learn if they can line up in the team's first home game, against Northern Pride at Virgin Australia Stadium this weekend.
