Cycling medals galore for Peters
JUST under a year after surgery for a brain tumour, Julius Peters has won seven national medals in cycling.
The Warwick rider returned home this week from the National Paracycling Championships in Adelaide where he won five medals.
He won a silver medal in the Queensland State Cycling Championships in the under-19 time trial and was mixing it with the best in the sport before his surgery.
Last year, Julius flew to Melbourne for a few days with his sister Nadia and was taken to a suburban hospital when he fell ill.
He was allowed to go home but an optometrist who shared with his sister thought something was wrong and Julius was soon in St Vincent's Hospital.
After the operation, he slowly recovered but is still having balance difficulties so he qualifies for paracycling events.
"Cycling has helped with my rehabilitation," he said.
He won gold in the time trial and was second in the road race in class C4 in round 1 of the national series in Toowoomba area and then drove 1800km to Adelaide with his father Wilfried for round 2 of the series and the national championships.
Julius ended up with five medals in Adelaide, mostly silver.
He was re-classified to C3 close to the end of racing to win bronze in the road race.
The class was for riders with a greater disability but Julius came up against one of the greats of the sport.
He is high in praise of the help from coach Tony Simonelli and parents Wilfried and Ruth Peters for their support of his career.
