Cyclists cruise into Rose City for charity ride
CYCLING: Watch out for a flash of blue when driving around Warwick for the next few days, as 55 riders have arrived in town for the Lions Children's Cancer Fun Ride.
Started by Sel Hardwick 14 years ago after his grandson was diagnosed with cancer, the ride aims to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Institute.
Hosted by the Lions Club of Kallangur, organiser Len Woodward said the riders would complete about 100km each day until Friday, travelling around the region to locations including Allora, Killarney and Yangan.
"I think there isn't a person anywhere whose life hasn't been touched by cancer, when it's a child it's worse” Mr Woodward said.
"Some of the riders have done upwards of 10 rides, it's a great community event.”
Raffle tickets will be sold outside the Criterion Hotel today and tomorrow between 10am-3pm to support the cause.
The group has managed to raise almost $600,000 over the past 14 years.
Riders mainly hail from south-east Queensland, but one woman has travelled from New Zealand three times to take part.
In addition to nomination fees, rides also conduct individual fundraising events and through the generosity of sponsors all proceeds from the ride are donated to the Children's Cancer Institute.
The Lions Clubs in Warwick and Killarney are providing evening meals for the riders, who will be based at Morgan Park for the duration of the event.
