D Day for Killarney in league is Saturday meeting
RUGBY LEAGUE: The future of the Killarney Cutters club and Border Rugby League is on the line if office bearers don't put their hands up on Saturday to run the Cutters in 2018.
Retiring president Aaron McKinney is a long time Cutters player and was president this season but said he wasn't standing again.
"I have two boys playing in the under-14 grade for Wattles and can't watch them play at noon on a Saturday and then be at all Cutters games,” he said.
"Between work and family commitments, I don't have the time to do the job.
"All office bearer and coaching positions need filling at the meeting at 1pm Saturday at the Killarney Recreation Club,” he said.
"If we don't fill position, we won't have a team in the 2018 Border Rugby League competition.
Last weekend, only eight turned up for the Killarney AGM and no positions were filled.
McKinney said even though the whole committee had stood down, they have offered to help new committee members.
"The meeting on Saturday is make or break for the club, it is important for the town to have a team,” he said.
The need for office bearers at Killarney also impacts on the BRL.
Four clubs played in the competition this season and Border president Norm Crisp said if Killarney did not have office bearers and a team, the league would not be viable with just Stanthorpe, Inglewood and Tenterfield clubs.
"If Killarney can't find a new executive and the club folds, the league folds,” he said.
"We can't play with three clubs.”
While Killarney is having the worst problems securing willing office bearers, Crisp said a number of clubs were looking for new office bearers.
If all clubs secure the required number of office bearers and four men's teams play next season, Crisp said the league would be hoping each club could also field a team in a women's league tag competition.
League tag was played in the BRL in 2015 and 2016.
