D Grade Champions are the best in WIRAC futsal
FUTSAL: After 10 rounds of action in WIRAC's term 3 futsal competition, D Grade Champions beat Zooma 8-7 in the much anticipated grand final.
With the stakes so high, no team was willing to finish without leaving it all on the court and, sure enough, this resulted in some terrific performances by all participants.
Battling for 5th place was the youthful Team Name taking on an older Unknown Quantities. Age and wisdom proved too much for Team Name, as Unknown Quantities clinched victory 4-2.
The battle for third was a showdown between Crittaz and Finger Lickin' Good.
Both teams looked superb on the night, playing an incredibly hard and fast game. Unfortunately for Finger Lickin' Good, Crittaz arose the victors with a stunning performance by competition MVP Michael West defeating Finger Lickin' Good 6-3.
The grand final match was the feature of the night and for all watching, it didn't disappoint.
Looking to make amends for their grand final defeat last season, D Grade Champions were determined to finish the night with a win.
However, reigning champions Zooma, were not prepared to give up their title without a fight.
From the start, both teams sought to find an early lead. Zooma, who were missing key player James Sheppard, struggled in the first half and a sensational back-heel flick off a corner by D Grade's Michael Washbourne, gave his team all the momentum heading into the second half with D Grade Champions up 4-1.
Zooma were quick to respond, firing in several goals to bring themselves back into the competition, however it was not enough with D Grade Champions holding on to win 8-7. - Alex Cutmore
