Dad and son are on the right track

ROOSTER Lucas is the best mountain bike rider in Queensland in his age group after winning the EXC Four-Hour Series.

The series was held over three rounds in Brisbane, Gatton and Gympie and Rooster won the open event.

His son Zac, 10, has enjoyed an outstanding season in mountain bike riding and won the state cross country and Sunshine Series in the under-11 age group this year.

Rooster won the Sunshine Series for the 30-39 years age group and stepped up to the elite class at the state titles to win a bronze medal.

"The bronze is my best result this year, I am 38 and the other four on the podium were in their twenties," he said.

Rooster said mountain bike events were through rough terrain with steep uphill and downhill grades.

"We go around 40kmh in mountain bike riding," he said.

Rooster trains 20 hours a week on the bike and Zac two to three hours a week, enough for junior events, which go for 15 minutes.

"I have a passion for mountain bike riding and the challenge of off-road competition," Rooster said.

Formerly a motocross rider, Rooster has competed in mountain bike riding for the past six years.

He has had some minor injuries, but nothing major.

"Zac would like a career in cycling but is too young to make that decision," Rooster said.

"He loves it and we have a good time doing it together."

Six riders from the Southern Downs compete in the sport.

"We have organised rides for mountain bike training and often join in with local cyclists for organised weekend rides."

Cyclists are welcome to join the rides from 6.30am on Saturday and Sunday from Redback Cycles in King Street.
