Payne and glory for Freestone junior sports star
FREESTONE table tennis player Aaron Payne has won a junior sports star award after excelling throughout 2015.
He was Queensland AWD table tennis champion at the age of 17 and went on to win a silver medal with Queensland in the teams' event at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide.
He won silver in singles when he went down to the eventual winner from New South Wales in the games final.
Aaron plays each Monday at St Mary's and travels to Toowoomba for Friday training.
Last year, he succeeded at state and national level without a coach but a lot of encouragement and support from his family.
He also has some state records for AWD athletics in the T37 classification. He competes mainly in 100m, 200m and shot put.
While Aaron is in the sport for fun and the enjoyment, he does admit he wants to keep going.
"It would be a dream to make it to the Paralympics," he said.
His next major event is likely to be the National Paralympic Table Tennis Championships.
The monthly winners from 2015 will be honoured at a March dinner at Hawker Rd Function Centre when the Condamine Sports Club Volunteer of the Year will also be named.
