WITH fine weather is on its way for the next few days and holiday makers and locals alike looking to cool off, Leslie Dam is set to be a hive of activity.

Clifton's Anita Scott said she and her family had been camping at the dam and visited regularly in an effort to make the most of the summer sun.

"When the weather is fine, we come every weekend," she said.

But she said spending so much time outdoors also meant sun screen, hats, sun shirts and plenty of water were staples for having fun.

She said her and children and other extended family took part in a range of water activities including knee boarding, water skiing and tubing.

"We have three boats between the families," she said.

The one water toy the Scotts didn't have was a jet ski, but with the dam a popular location for the crafts, the fine weather served as a timely reminder to be familiar with laws surrounding use of vehicles in the water.

New jet ski laws came in play as the clock ticked over at midnight on Sunday and while most of them catered to open waters; one was relevant to dam goers.

Marine Infrastructure Minister Craig Wallace said the changes had been put into place to protect all water users and reduce risk of accidents.

"People operating jet skis at more than 10 knots have to keep a 30-metre distance from other vessels," Mr Wallace said.

"The 30-metre distance rule will mean jet ski users and everyone around them have enough space to enjoy our waterways safely."

Mr Wallace said one of the reasons for the change in legislation was because jet skis were now a lot more powerful than they used to be.

"And are capable of travelling faster and further distances, so it makes sense that enhanced safety measures are put in place," Mr Wallace said.
