Dam still a high priority

MARANOA MP Bruce Scott has reassured Southern Downs residents Emu Swamp Dam is high on the priority list during a visit to Stanthorpe yesterday.

Mr Scott spoke with primary school students, business owners, residents and local producers to gauge their concerns ahead of the September 7 election.

Following a meeting with Southern Downs Councillor Vic Pennisi, Mr Scott said the Emu Swamp Dam proposal was still on his radar.

"It ranks highly, because a lot of work has gone into the project rather than it being just an idea, so that's one of the things that have made it a very strong contender for consideration," he said.

"I want to emphasise the work that's gone into this over a long period of time to establish the feasibility of the dam."

Mr Scott also met with a group of horticultural producers, who expressed their concerns about the future for smaller growers.

"The primary discussion was about the market power of major supermarkets and how that's pushing down on returns to producers," he said.

"If elected, we would be conducting a review of the market power of major supermarkets."

Mr Scott said he would also move to reduce red and green tape to ease costs for producers.
