Murphy's Super victory as Cutters win grand final
FORMER Warwick Cowboys half Dan Murphy is celebrating after the Mackay Cutters championed a 27-20 victory over Easts Tigers in an emotionally charged Intrust Super Cup grand final at the North Ipswich Reserve at the weekend.
Murphy, who plays the five-eighth position, said it was a tough game.
"It all went down at the last five minutes," he said.
"We didn't have it in the bag until pretty much the last minute of the game."
Murphy said he would continue to live in Mackay, but still holds our town close to his heart.
"I'll just keep playing footy and see what happens," he said.
"I'd also like to thank all the people in Warwick for all their support."
The Cutters played in honour of fellow teammate Alex Elisala, who took his own life in April this year.
"All the boys pulled together and did it for him," Murphy said.
The number 14 jersey sits retired in Elisala's honour.
After suffering a major knee injury in July at his first game with the Mackay Cutters, Murphy said he was fully healed and all good to go.
"It's now 100% better, but it took a little while to get back to normal," he said. "We have got a pretty good bunch of boys, which makes it easier."
The match saw the Tigers lead 8-0 in the first half before two tries to Cutters winger Bureta Faraimo dragged the North Queenslanders back into the contest.
The Tigers also led 14-10 at halftime, but the Cutters were having none of it.
It was a nail-biting end of the match with both times at 20-20 with 11 minutes to go, and Mackay's win of 27-20 denied the Easts a clean-sweep of the grand finals.
