D'Arcy has ground to make up

NICK D'Arcy has had the challenge laid in front of him after finishing second in the 200m butterfly at the Santa Clara Invitational yesterday.

In one of his last London Olympics lead-up events D'Arcy stopped the clock in one minute 56.43, nearly two seconds behind Japan's Takeshi Matsuda.

The 2008 Olympic bronze medallist set a blistering early pace and while D'Arcy made good ground on the last lap, Matsuda touched the wall at 1:54.57, well ahead of the Sunshine Coast swimmer.

D'Arcy famously defeated Michael Phelps at the Santa Clara Invitational last year.

However, the 14-time Olympic champion bypassed this year's event.

Instead Phelps competed yesterday at the Longhorn Elite Invitational, where he led from start to finish to clock a time of 1:54.79 in the 200m fly.

D'Arcy also finished eighth in the 100m fly at the Sara Clara Invitational late last week.
