Dead animal puts stink on city's police station

A DEAD animal in a sewer system made for an unpleasant afternoon of police enforcement yesterday after a strange smell spewed from an underground sewer.

A strange smell emanating from somewhere between the Hume St watch house and the Toowoomba Courthouse was reported to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services shortly before 5pm Monday.

Crews identified the smell was spilling from somewhere between the two buildings, and tests with a gas monitor found oxygen levels were low.

A QFES spokeswoman said further investigations revealed the smell was caused by a dead animal in the sewer system underground.

The scene was declared safe by 5.15pm.

It is unclear whether the offending animal has been removed from the sewer.
