'Deadly' ambition and dedication pay off for Sue Ray

ROOTS musician Sue Ray describes herself as an overnight success story - that night just took 15 years to arrive.

After years of performing and struggling to gain a profile, the stars have aligned for the Toowoomba-raised singer, who has been named as a finalist for Most Promising New Talent in Music at the Deadlys.

Ms Ray received the news in the same week as picking up a nomination for the QMusic Awards' People's Choice Award for Female Artist Of The Year.

She said several years of consistent hard work had culminated in a flurry of success.

"I sat there dumbfounded, thinking 'have I got a fairy godmother?'

"It's incredible to be lobbed in against such people (in the Deadly Awards)…I'll have to find something to wear - it's going to be my first red carpet, my first nomination."

Ms Ray said that recognition of Indigenous artists had moved ahead leaps and bounds.

"There's always a fair way to go.

"At this point in time, I think there's a lot of great things happening musically and artistically."
