Deadwood win in five in Warwick volleyball grand final
VOLLEYBALL: Deadwood won the first, fourth and fifth sets to win the Warwick Volleyball Association men's grand final on Monday night at the John Muir Centre at Scots PGC College.
In the season decider, Deadwood won the second set 22-20, the fourth 21-10 and then the deciding set 23-21.
NADS was victorious 21-18 in the first and 21-13 in the third.
Deadwood is a combination which has played together over a long period.
The team includes Marianne Clayton, one of the best women players in association history, along with Brett Singh, Lasse Christensen and Michel Kairouz.
Marianne and daughter Lesley both played in the winning Reloaded team in the mixed grand final.
They won 21-15, 21-19, 15-21, 15-21 and 21-14 against the Cookies and Cream combination.
The winning Reloaded team also included Jason Skinner, his daughter Gabrielle and Jason's brother-in-law Lasse Christensen.
In the ladies final, the Grinners team of Lisa Bergemann, her cousin Jordan Neal and the Waters sisters, Ellen and Allyne, won 21-13, 21-14 and 21-8 from the Ballbusters team of Ainsley Cupitt, Sharni Rielly, Chloe Ruhle and mother-and-daughter Wendy and Emily Hoffman.
Bergemann said team member Ellen Waters got her team off on the right foot.
"Ellen had a good run of aces on her serve in the first game to put us in the lead and was our best player,” she said
Season 2 in Warwick volleyball will start on July 16 and officials are keen to attract more players.
Teams nominate in ladies' and men's teams of four players while mixed teams of six are welcome to play. Individual players are also welcome to nominate and can be placed in a team.
Fixtures in the three grades are played on Monday nights at Scots PGC.
