Debutantes to keep popular tradition alive

DEBUTANTE balls are alive and kicking in the Rose City, as the date of the popular Caledonian Ball approaches.

The Warwick Caledonian Society Debutante Ball will be held in May and has been a well-supported tradition for the last 66 years.

Caledonian Ball organiser Anne Coy said debutante balls remained a popular rite of passage for girls in the Rose City.

"We have a few interested girls already for this year," she said. "It's a really lovely night for the young kids - we teach them how to dance."

The girls are taught a number of different dances, including one formal dance.

"It's not just strictly ballroom," Mrs Coy said.

"In the past the girls have learnt fun dances such as the Macarena."

Mrs Coy made her debut at the Caledonian Ball in Warwick, as did her three sisters and two daughters.

"The Warwick Caledonian Society is the oldest in Queensland, if not Australia," she said.

The tradition of the debutante balls dates back hundreds of years, to when girls around the age of 16 made their debut on their first night out.

This year there's a change, with a new act providing music - Mike Woollett the Honky Tonk Man.

Mrs Coy said Mike was sure to liven things up.

"There will be a pipe band and all sorts of entertainment," she said.

"The ball will also include a supper."

Tickets to the ball will be priced at $30 for adults, $20 for students and $10 for children.

The Caledonian Ball will be held at the St Mary's Hall on May 10 at 8pm.

A meeting will be held at the Scots College Libraryon Monday at 3.30pm for any girls interested in being a debutante this year.

All debs will receive a brooch and sash as a memento of the evening, with a small charge for bouquets.

As many as 30 girls are expected to take part in this year's ball.

Girls interested in taking part in the ball can phone Anne Coy on 4666 1507.
