Dedicated volunteer given state medal for diligent service

ONE proud local volunteer represented Warwick at the combined Queensland Police Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Medals and Awards Ceremony in Toowoomba.

The Glen Rural Fire Brigade first officer, secretary and fire warden John Skinner was presented with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Medal at the ceremony in the Empire Theatre last week.

The medal recognises a demonstrated commitment to ethical standards, personal integrity and diligent service for a prolonged period and was presented by QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll along with Minister for Emergency Services Mark Ryan.

Acting Inspector John Welke, the area director for rural fires, said Mr Skinner served a vital role in protecting properties throughout the Southern Downs area and further afield.

"John has worked in Rural Fire Services at The Glen for nearly 20 years and has come under attention on a number of occasions for his leadership and personal skills at some dangerous fires,” Insp Welke said.

"Although The Glen brigade is made up of a fairly small band of volunteers, it performs well above standards set by QFES and the members are recognised for their firefighting abilities.”
