University degree a pathway to full-time work
THE vast majority of new university graduates with sought-after degrees in medicine, pharmacy and mining engineering are walking into jobs.
A survey of more than 174,000 graduates last week revealed that 92% of graduates in medicine, pharmacy, mining engineering, surveying and nursing were in full-time jobs four months after graduation.
Tertiary Education Minister Senator Chris Evans said the figures showed 76% of all bachelor degree graduates found full-time work within four months of completing their degrees.
Another 15% of graduates found work part-time or casually, but not necessarily in their chosen field.
The 2012 Australian Graduate Survey also revealed more than 94% of bachelor degree graduates were broadly satisfied with their uni experience.
"Australian universities are recognised globally as quality education providers," Senator Evans said.
"The Academic Ranking of World Universities this year placed five Australian institutions in the top 100, with 19 of Australia's 37 public universities made the top 500.
