Denny boy tops QAS honours after gold

ALLORA'S Matthew Denny has joined elite company after being crowned the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) male Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Denny learned of his latest honour at the 2013 QAS awards presentation evening.

The 17-year-old shared the stage with Olympic hurdle gold medallist Sally Pearson who was named female Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Denny's recognition is another high point in a rewarding year capped by his success at the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships in Ukraine during July.

Denny claimed the 1.5kg discus gold medal with a personal best throw of 65.74cm.

He attended the awards evening unaware he was about to be named Queensland's best.

"I wasn't really expecting it, and it was a real surprise to hear my name read out," Denny said.

"It's a great honour, especially with Sally Pearson being named female winner. To be named alongside her is pretty special."

Denny is in training with coach Grahame Pitt for the upcoming Queensland, GPS and national titles.

"I'm carrying a few injury niggles, and I'm not performing at my best," Denny said. "But I'll get them all sorted and be right to go."
