Denny fans will be in for late night when he throws in Rio

ATHLETICS: Allora athlete Matthew Denny will throw in one of two groups late Friday night, Australian time, at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The 32 competitors will be divided into group A and B for discus qualifying.

Group A will compete at 10.30pm, Australian time, and group B at 11.55pm. Each athlete will have three throws but once they throw an automatic qualifier for the final, they will not use any remaining attempts.

The field is wide open with four throwers having a best this year of 68m and more.

The world best this year is Poland competitor Piotr Malachowski who threw 68.15m in May and 68.10m in June.

Ten throwers have bettered 67m this year and 23 have throws this year above 66m.

Denny has the 30th best throw for the year in the world at 65.37m in late May at Salinda in the United States.

Before he left home he was happy with his form believing he would need to throw close to his personal best to qualify for the final.

The final between the best 12 starts at 11.50pm Saturday, Australian time.
