Australia Day message: stop, revive, survive the drive
DESPITE Australia Day falling on a Tuesday this year, the Gladfield Driver Reviver will be back in operation for the holiday weekend.
Each holiday season up to 200 Driver Reviver Sites open right across Australia.
Driver Reviver is a community program operated by volunteers from a wide range of service organisations and community groups, whose members give up their own time to help reduce the road toll.
From noon on Friday until 6pm Tuesday, volunteers with the Driver Reviver will keep the rest stop open 24-7.
Gladfield Driver Reviver roster co-ordinator Peter Hardwick said Christmas and New Year's Eve had been a busy time for his team of volunteers, with the rest stop open for 16 days during the holiday period.
"I would like to pass on my thanks to all the volunteers who put their hand up over the Christmas period," he said.
"It's always the busiest time of the year and it takes a lot of help to keep the rest stop open for the entire period."
Mr Hardwick said the Driver Reviver initiative played an important role in helping weary travellers reach their destination safely.
"There have been too many deaths and accidents on our roads in recent times," he said.
"Even if we only get one person that calls in and that's the life we save, it's well worth us being there."
Mr Hardwick said there was always a need for more volunteers, and expected plenty of drivers to stop in at the rest stop this weekend.
"We try and roster around each individual's commitments and make it work for everyone," he said. "I'm sure with the Australian mentality of taking a long weekend off to go travelling that we will see a decent number of drivers on the roads this weekend."
