Director of football recognised

FOOTBALL: It’s been another week of recognition for Southern Downs Football Academy director Tim Gaske, who was appointed technical director of coaching for juniors at USQ Football Club.

Already operating the academy’s football department, Gaske will work closely with the Toowoomba club during the 2020 season.

“It’s great for me personally but it’s also good for our academy,” Gaske said.

“You’ve got a town like Toowoomba and a club like USQ and they’ve seen the work we’re doing and they can recognise that.”

While Gaske welcomes the extra responsibility, he said his focus would remain with helping children achieve their greatest potential.

“We just want to give every kid in the Southern Downs an opportunity to train at a higher level,” he said. “What we’re doing will create opportunities and pathways for our players to be seen in Toowoomba, and potentially even by the NPL (National Premier Leagues).”

Season 2020 might seem like a while a way but Gaske said preparations were already being put into place.

“Our kids are already training for next year and they will until mid-November,” he said.

“Next year, I’ll be helping the other USQ coaches in the under-12s to under-17s, passing on knowledge about coaching and helping them run sessions once a week.

“At the academy, we’re aiming to hold training sessions with clubs in Stanthorpe and other places around the region if they want us to.”
