Disability Action Week shines spotlight on local stars

DISABILITY Action Week is under way and it is wonderful to see so many positive stories already emerging from our community.

Eagle Boys franchisee John Rye is setting a great example for his local counterparts and embracing workers with disabilities at his pizza store (page 6).

Glenda Shanahan is a long-time employee whose love for the job is clear.

She heads to work with a smile on her face, gets down to business and has built strong bonds with her workmates, who have affectionately dubbed her "mum".

On page 4, reporter Ben Wilmott shares the news of the Endeavour Foundation's pilot work readiness program.

The first round of graduates of the fledgling program, which is aimed to skill participants before they enter the workforce, spent yesterday afternoon celebrating in style - and of course, with cake.

Local businesses and organisations, including Rainbow FM, Aquabird and Bunnings, threw their support behind the program and offered work experience for the participants.

Endeavour is an invaluable service to our community and this new program seems to be beneficial to not only participants but also employers, who are given an opportunity to really experience the value employees with disabilities can bring.
