Celebrate Disability Action Week

DISABILITY Action Week will be celebrated in the Southern Downs over the next two days and all local residents are invited to join in.

Come along to the Disability Action Week Fun Day at Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) tomorrow from 10:00am.

To be opened by the Honourable Phil Reeves, Minister for Child Youth, Sport and Recreation, the day then kicks off with a fun and fantastic musical workshop.

Energetic local music group, Pangea Music, will teach you how to play marimbas!

Later there will be line dancing and Zumba classes, a delicious sausage sizzle cooked by the local Lions Club, and a wheel chair dancing demonstration.

Community Development Officer Pam Burley said the free day of entertainment was not just for people with disabilities and their families.

"We really want to encourage everyone to come along and see what people with a disability can really do! It's a great day," Mrs Burley said.

"If you can't make it on Thursday, come along to the Shimmy Shimmy Shake and Sing on Friday night at St Mary's Hall, organised by Community Options," she added.

"This night is a total hoot!" Mrs Burley said. "These guys know how to have FUN without the use of alcohol and artificial stimulants. Now there's a challenge for you!!!

"Come along and take part in karaoke, line dancing, bush dancing and disco starting at 6.30pm - it's only a good coin donation to enter and there are heaps of prizes to be won."

Mayor Ron Bellingham said that along with the festivities, the week carries an important message.

"This is all about focusing on what people of all abilities are able to do, not what they can't do," Cr Bellingham said.

"It's about changing public perceptions and encouraging social interaction and integration within the whole community," he added.

"People with disabilities and their families are an important part of our community, who are often an inspiration in the way they deal with their sometimes difficult situations.

"I encourage everyone to join in these festivities."
