Disgraced former footy president jailed for sex assaults

A FORMER Ipswich junior rugby league official is behind bars after detectives used DNA to link him to a cold case sexual assault.

David John Armstrong, who had been living in Yamanto until recently, faced court in Perth after being charged with an early morning attack on a woman in Ocean Reef nine years ago.

Western Australian media has reported that Armstrong, 44, was sentenced in the Perth District Court last Friday to 16 months jail over the attack after pleading guilty to sexual penetration without consent.

The court heard the Former RAAF officer had previously served time behind bars for similar attacks on random female victims.

His previous offences included the sexual assault of a woman, 34, at a WA TAFE college in June, 2007 and an attack on a woman, 78, who was out on her morning walk the following year.

He was charged over the Ocean Reef assault last year after a cold case review, in which the State Crime Operations Squad used DNA from the victim's clothing to link Armstrong to the crime.

The court heard he followed the woman and then assaulted her on a bike path near the corner of Ocean Reef Road and Swanson Way, about 8.30am on July 8, 2007.

Armstrong, then aged 36, grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth with his hand and sexually assaulted her.

The victim, 50, managed to escape by biting her attacker on the finger.

Detectives tracked Armstrong down in Ipswich last June and charged him.

He had taken on the role of junior president for a rugby league club while living in Ipswich, but was removed from the position when the allegations against him came to light.
