Rockhampton psychotherapist says people need to chill out
DO CERTAIN situations stress you out?
Well you are not alone, with nine in ten Australians trying to avoid any situation that will bring on stress.
Rockhampton psychotherapist Andrew Kennedy, of Mental Health Consultancies, says he sees people stressed everyday.
"The biggest thing you notice about stress is how stress ages you," he said.
"There is a certain overall acceptance of anxiety - everyone is anxious about something."
A whopping 92% of us avoid stressful situations, according to the NIVEA Stress Protect Report.
So, where do we feel the heat the most?
Mostly in the workplace, with public speaking and job interviews the top two causes for people to stress out.
While other high-stress situations affecting us are important meetings (31%), being late due to traffic (28%) and first dates (26%).
Mr Kennedy agrees with the survey, saying time stress and financial stress are also two big causes.
"Two most important things are reflections, taking time out to think about your day," he said.
"And understand the situation you're in, people don't take time to reflect.
"Look at yourself, make sure your internal dialog isn't making the stress - 'I must have this done by the end of day' - you're setting yourself up for a stressful day."
You can only really generate change within yourself, Mr Kennedy said.
"That's all you really have control over."
Tips to Stay Calm
- Bellybutton breaths - take three good deep breaths.
- Take some time out and reflect on your day.
- Control your inner dialogue; take a minute to tell yourself "not to panic".
