Karara Sheep Dog trials attract a big field of competitors

A RECORD 120 dogs and handlers have nominated for the open event at the annual Karara Sheep Dog Trials which start tomorrow.

Event secretary Lorraine Welsh said five handlers were heading north from New South Wales for the trials.

"We have a lot of handlers coming from Brisbane who are new to the sport," Mrs Welsh said.

"Some people are running handler schools in the Brisbane area, so we now have more women competing."

A trophy will be presented for the highest score by a woman handler in any of the four classes.

Open, improver, novice and an encouragement class for beginners are on the program.

Competition starts tomorrow at 7.30am and then at 7am Saturday and Sunday at the Karara Recreation Grounds.
