Barking mad for off-leash park

IT'S an issue that's had tongues and tails wagging across the Rose City with residents still barking mad for an off-leash dog park.

For years dog owners have been raising the need for a designated off-leash area for their beloved pets, with plenty of chatter about where the best site for such a facility would be.

The issue has again been unleashed this week, with one new Warwick pet owner joining the push for an off-leash park.

Michelle Fischer, who bought a fox terrier puppy called Bundy two weeks ago, said she had been having a number of conversations with fellow dog owners on her morning walks.

"Taking Bundy for a walk has been getting us talking to dog people," she said.

"The idea came to mind when we were walking up Glen Rd, we met an older lady new to town and she asked if there was a dog park in Warwick."

Large open areas including Australiana Park and the River Walk are all limited to dogs walking on a leash only, with fines and warnings issued to owners found to have their dogs off-leash.

Mrs Fischer said she believed Australiana Park or the River Walk would be great locations for an off-leash dog park.

"It would have to be somewhere close to town," she said.

"I think it'd be a good chance for dogs and their owners to socialise.

"It'd keep the dogs active - they like to interact."

Earlier this year a petition was presented to Southern Downs Regional Council by residents asking for a fenced off-leash dog park.

Acting CEO David Tuxford said an off-leash dog park was considered in the 2014/15 budget deliberations.

"Council felt it could not be accommodated in this financial year's works," he said.

"Council understands that having an off-leash dog park would be a valuable community asset and would take this into account for the 15/16 financial year."

A similar push for a fenced off-leash dog park was successful in Toowoomba in 2012, with Toowoomba Regional Council erecting a popular facility in Thiess Park.

The five-star dog park at Thiess Park cost Toowoomba Regional Council more than $100,000 spread across two budgets, with more fenced off-leash areas planned for construction following a survey issued in 2013.

As well as appropriate and sturdy fencing, off-leash parks require a water connection, seating, dog-poo bins and other amenities.

Do you think Warwick needs a fenced off-leash dog park?

Where do you think council should put one?
