Dominant in touch

KRIS Wright, Alica Mauch and Garry Mauch know their way around a touch field better than most – they have played in more than 15 premiership winning Breakaways sides in mixed touch.

The Breakaways team was formed 15 years ago and has only missed the grand final four times.

Except for one year, two seasons of touch have been played annually which means Breakaways have been in about 25 grand finals.

As they did on Wednesday night in a 4-3 win against Allora Butchery, Breakaways win more season deciders than they lose.

Alica said the girls in her team really enjoyed the mixed competition.

“It is very competitive in A-grade and a lot faster than in ladies,” Alica said.

Wright said the girls in the Breakaways team were strong in the grand final.

“We will probably be back next season,” he said.

Wright has played the game for 25 years and shows no signs of doing anything else but touch each Wednesday night.

He said the experience in his side helped in the grand final.

“Our ball control and defence won the game,” Wright said.

“Allora Butchery is a young side and they did very well in the grand final.”

Garry Mauch is also one of the Breakways originals and won his fourth player of the final award in the mixed competition on Wednesday night.

In B-grade, Tops Off won 10-7 against Grog Monsters.
