Don chips in a win

A CHIP over the bunker into the hole was what Don Warrener needed to win his first Warwick Sporters Golf Club shootout title on Wednesday.

The title win was his second in a week after taking the Warwick Golf Club veteran's title for players 55 years and over last weekend.

In a sign that championship form can continue in shootout finals, C-grade champion Neil Carney was runner-up to Warrener.

The Jackie Howe Motel Shootout started with 19 players on the first hole, chosen on the basis of their top four stableford scores during the past 12 months.

The player with the highest nett score on each hole was eliminated which left Phil Covill, Carney and Warrener to play the final two holes.

The three were locked on the same score on the 17th before Covill was eliminated in the chip off.

Warrener and Carney were equal on the 18th before the chip off.

"There was silence when Neil and I chipped as the winner had to be closest to the pin," Warrener said.

"Neil was less than two metres from the hole from a difficult spot. I had nothing to lose and the chip went in the hole, you only chip in once in a blue moon."

Warrener was the 19th player to qualify for the shootout and knows how unforgiving the event is.

"I was first eliminated last year after hitting my second shot behind a tree and then putting my third shot into the bunker," he said.

"I don't know what it is, but we all really enjoy the shoot-outs even if it takes seven hours."
